Gousto is committed to sustainably packaged meal kits. The company partnered with Xampla to create a plastic-free alternative to traditional stock cube wrappers.

Gousto and Xampla partnered to create the world’s first edible stock-cube wrapper made from plant protein. Morro Edible Film is a direct replacement for plastic, offering the shelf life stability needed, with a much lower environmental impact. They sold out within an hour of going on sale.

What we did.

Gousto and Xampla partnered to create the world’s first edible stock-cube wrapper made from plant protein. Morro Edible Film is a direct replacement for plastic, offering the shelf life stability needed, with a much lower environmental impact. The packaging was developed to protect the stock cube during transit and storage but dissolve completely when cooked.

Uniquely, as Morro materials are made from 100% natural ingredients, it is edible, vegan and gluten free. It is a zero-waste solution with the potential to replace 15.6 tonnes of plastic annually across Gousto’s meal kits alone, and thousands more tonnes of plastic across the FMCG market.

The results.

Around the world 855 billion sachets are produced and used annually, accounting for a significant proportion of ocean plastic pollution. This innovation has the power to dramatically reduce this waste and make a significant contribution to reduce the 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste that enters freshwater and marine ecosystems annually.

For Gousto alone, the market potential of this material is huge, replacing not just stock cube wrappings but all plastic films within their recipe boxes.
Morro innovative technology could remove 15.6 tonnes of plastic per year from Gousto boxes.

“At Gousto, our purpose is to build products that have a positive impact on people and the planet and we invest in innovations that will help us get there. We are so proud of our Eco Chill Box and the significant amount of plastic we cut from our boxes as a result. Our partnership with Xampla is another super exciting step towards reducing plastic packaging even further.”
