What is Morro Coating?

Morro Coating is a plant based material, created to replace paper and cardboard coatings. This breakthrough material can be used as an alternative to petrochemical-based or fluorochemical coatings, but can be recycled in existing waste stream processes.

A natural replacement

Morro Coating offers a natural and sustainable solution to reduce plastic usage and remove ‘forever chemicals’ from packaging. The fully biodegradable and home compostable material is safe for food contact.

What’s the problem?

Food packaging, such as takeaway boxes, are often coated with Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) or plastic. These synthetic coatings make containers resistant to grease, liquids and heat, but have concerning environmental and health consequences.

Working with a range of products

Made from plants, Morro materials can be applied to a variety of substrates and tailored for use within a range of goods, from cosmetics to food packaging. Our coating can be easily solubilised and removed during the repulping processes, enabling the recyclability of coating paperboard packaging.

How does it compare?

Morro Coating provides the necessary grease-barrier protection for applications such as takeaway food boxes. Made from just plants, it poses no risk for direct contact with food. At the end of life, it enables the recyclability of paperboard packaging, leaving no harmful chemicals behind in the natural environment.

The consequences of "forever chemicals"

When in direct contact with food, PFAS can seep into what we eat. This has potentially significant impact on human health as the chemicals do not break down in the body.

As these chemicals are ‘forever chemicals’, they also do not breakdown in the environment contaminating soil and water systems when disposed of, contributing to long-term ecological damage.

Incoming regulation is increasingly restricting the use of PFAS food packaging to mitigate these environmental and health risks. As a result, brands and manufacturers alike urgently need natural and safer materials to futureproof against regulation.
